A French actress shooting a peace film in postwar Hiroshima spends a night and a day with a Japanese architect, and as they talk her memories of a forbidden wartime love in occupied France begin bleeding into the city's own catastrophe. Written by Marguerite Duras, Alain Resnais's landmark debut broke open what cinema could do with time and memory, and remains one of the founding works of the French New Wave.
