A poet, a soldier and the woman they both love are swept into the horror of the First World War, building to the legendary sequence in which the war dead rise from the battlefield to ask the living whether their sacrifice was worthwhile. Abel Gance's monumental silent epic, shot partly on real battlefields with soldiers on leave, remains one of cinema's most powerful anti-war cries.
