Sailor Ripley's snakeskin jacket is, as he tells anyone who will listen, "a symbol of my individuality and my belief in personal freedom." Barely out of prison for killing a man who came at him with a knife, Sailor (Nicolas Cage) breaks parole and hits the road with his girlfriend Lula (Laura Dern), heading west across the American South. Lula's mother Marietta (Diane Ladd, Dern's real-life mother), who loathes Sailor, sends a private detective after them, then a gangster's hitmen. David Lynch's adaptation of Barry Gifford's novel is a road movie both brutal and swooning, full of fire, Elvis and The Wizard of Oz, and it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1990 to cheers and boos alike.
